Let’s Take a Look at “Pete’s Dragon”
As a movie lover, it’s always exciting when you come across a movie that leaves you awestruck. And that was exactly how I felt after watching Disney’s “Pete’s Dragon”.
The Storyline
The storyline is one that pulls at the heartstrings of any viewer. It is an adventurous tale of an orphan boy named Pete, who has been living in the woods with his dragon friend, Elliot, for six years. The boy is eventually discovered by Grace, a forest ranger played by the talented Bryce Dallas Howard. She quickly discovers that Pete has been living with a dragon named Elliot and sets out to unravel the mystery behind their relationship.
The Plot
The plot revolves around these two unlikely companions and their adventures together. As Grace tries to figure out where Pete came from and why he was living in the forest all alone, she begins to uncover secrets about Elliot’s past as well. Along the way, they encounter obstacles and try to evade Gavin (Karl Urban), who is determined to capture Elliot for his own selfish reasons.
The Cast
In terms of casting, Disney did an excellent job selecting actors who brought life to their respective characters. Bryce Dallas Howard was exceptional as Grace in her subtle portrayal of a ranger with a heart of gold. Oakes Fegley, who played Pete, was equally impressive in his performance as a young boy who had lost his parents but found solace in the presence of Elliot the dragon.
The Acting and Characters
One of the standout performances for me was Robert Redford as an old man who claims to have seen a dragon before. His portrayal was commendable, and it left me wondering if he had seen Elliot or if it was just an elaborate story. Wes Bentley, who played Jack, Grace’s boyfriend, also delivered an excellent performance as he struggled with accepting the reality of what Pete had been through.
The History
The original “Pete’s Dragon” movie was released in 1977 as an animated musical. Disney remade the movie as a live-action/CGI version that premiered in August 2016 at the El Capitan Theatre. Some elements of the original movie were kept intact while others were changed to suit modern audiences.
The Score and Popularity
One aspect that caught my attention was the musical score composed by Daniel Hart. It was simply amazing and did justice to the theme of the movie. The soundtrack also featured tracks from Lindsey Stirling and Bonnie “Prince” Billy.
The movie was well-received by critics and audiences alike, grossing over $143 million worldwide against a production budget of $65 million.
My Evaluation
I must say that this movie had me feeling all sorts of emotions. I laughed, cried, and felt inspired all at once. The bond between Pete and Elliot was heartwarming, and their relationship was portrayed so beautifully that it felt real.
The visuals were stunning, especially the scenes where Elliot would take off for a flight. The detailing on Elliot’s scales was done with such precision that it looked like he could just fly right out of the screen.
Criticisms
One criticism I have is that some elements of the plot seemed rushed. The relationship between Grace and Jack felt underdeveloped, as did Gavin’s backstory. It would have been nice to see more depth in these areas.
Another issue I had was with Karl Urban’s character, Gavin. He just seemed like a one-dimensional villain who only wanted to capture Elliot for his own selfish reasons without any real development or depth in his character.
The Production
The production team did an excellent job with the CGI animations, and it was amazing to see the level of detail in Elliot’s design. The production budget was $65 million, but it was money well spent as the final product was a masterpiece.
The Special Effects and Cinematography
The special effects were top-notch, and the cinematography was excellent. The scenes where Elliot flies through the forest or over the town were breathtaking. The way these scenes were shot made it seem like Elliot was actually there, and you could almost feel the wind blowing past your face.
The Dialogues
The dialogue was simple yet powerful, and there were quite a few memorable lines that stuck with me. One such line was when Grace asks Pete if he ever gets lonely. To which he replies: “I have Elliot”. This showed how important Elliot was to him and how much their bond had grown over the years.
The Crew
The crew involved in making this movie did an excellent job. From the director David Lowery to the writers Toby Halbrooks and David Lowery and the rest of the production team, they all deserve credit for creating something so beautiful.
The Soundtracks
As previously mentioned, the soundtrack was excellent. Lindsey Stirling’s version of “Something Wild”, which features in the movie, is a personal favorite of mine. The music helped to set the tone for different scenes and added to the overall experience.
What “Pete’s Dragon” Means to Me
This movie has touched me deeply and is one that I will not forget anytime soon. It depicts love, compassion, friendship, and most importantly, it shows that family isn’t always just blood-related.
“Pete’s Dragon” reminded me that life can be challenging at times but having someone by your side who supports you through it all makes a significant difference. Watching this movie made me feel like I was part of Pete and Elliot’s journey.
The Final Verdict
All in all, “Pete’s Dragon” is a phenomenal movie that deserves recognition for its masterful storytelling and exceptional visuals. For anyone who hasn’t seen it yet, I would highly recommend giving it a watch.
