Movie Review: Ophelia
When you hear the name “Ophelia,” you probably think of the character in Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” But did you know that there’s a movie called “Ophelia” that tells her story from her point of view? I recently watched this movie and was blown away by how captivating it was. In this article, I’ll share my thoughts on the storyline, cast, cinematography, and more.
The Storyline
“Ophelia” is set in medieval Denmark and follows the story of Ophelia, a young woman who serves as a lady-in-waiting to Queen Gertrude. The movie starts with Ophelia as a child and gives us an idea of how she grew up in court. As she gets older, she becomes friends with Prince Hamlet and falls in love with him. However, their relationship is complicated due to the feud between Hamlet’s family and Ophelia’s father.
The Cast
Daisy Ridley plays Ophelia and does an amazing job. Her performance is both vulnerable and strong at the same time. George MacKay plays Hamlet and brings a sense of mystery to the character. Naomi Watts plays Queen Gertrude and delivers a powerful performance.
The Cinematography
The cinematography in “Ophelia” is stunning. The movie is set in medieval Denmark, and the visuals transport you to that time period. The landscapes, costumes, and sets are all beautifully done. The use of colors is also noteworthy – there are scenes where the colors are muted and others where they are vibrant.
The Score and Popularity
The score for “Ophelia” was composed by Steven Price and adds to the film’s intensity. As for its popularity, it has a 62% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which isn’t bad but also isn’t great. However, I believe that this movie deserves more recognition than it’s currently getting.
My Evaluation
Overall, I loved “Ophelia.” It’s a movie that will make you feel a range of emotions – happiness, heartbreak, anger, and more. The fact that it tells the story of Ophelia from her perspective is refreshing. It’s not often that we get to see Shakespearean characters in this light.
The Dialogue & Characters
The dialogue in “Ophelia” is well-written and engaging. You won’t find yourself losing interest in any of the conversations that take place. As for the characters, they all have depth to them. Even characters who may seem one-dimensional at first end up surprising you with their complexities.
The Gossip & Criticism
There hasn’t been much gossip surrounding “Ophelia,” but one criticism that I’ve heard is that the movie doesn’t follow Shakespeare’s original play closely enough. However, I believe that this is a strength of the movie – it takes creative liberties with the story and gives us a fresh take on it.
The Production & Editing
The production quality of “Ophelia” is top-notch. The movie was filmed in the Czech Republic and you can tell that a lot of care went into creating the sets and costumes. As for the editing, there are some scenes where the transitions are a bit jarring, but overall it’s well-done.
Conclusion
If you’re a fan of Shakespearean literature or just love movies with strong female leads, then “Ophelia” is definitely worth watching. It’s a movie that will stay with you long after it’s over.
