Feeling Freaky: My Take on the New Slasher Comedy Movie
If you’re a fan of horror movies that don’t take themselves too seriously, then “Freaky” might just be the movie for you. This slasher comedy has everything you could want in a horror film – suspense, gore, and plenty of laughs. But what really stands out is how the movie manages to blend these elements so seamlessly. It’s a fine line to walk between cheesy and genuinely scary, but “Freaky” pulls it off with ease.
The Plot
The premise of the movie is simple: a teenage girl named Millie (played by Kathryn Newton) swaps bodies with a serial killer known as the Blissfield Butcher (Vince Vaughn). This happens thanks to an ancient dagger that has mystical powers. Millie now has just 24 hours to switch back before she becomes trapped in the body of a killer forever.
It’s not exactly the most original idea for a horror movie, but what sets “Freaky” apart is how it handles the concept. The movie doesn’t take itself too seriously, and it knows exactly what kind of movie it wants to be. It’s a slasher flick with heart, and that makes all the difference.
The Cast
Kathryn Newton and Vince Vaughn are both excellent in their respective roles. Newton brings a lot of heart to the character of Millie, and it’s easy to root for her throughout the movie. Vaughn, on the other hand, is hilarious as the Blissfield Butcher trapped in Millie’s body. He manages to balance the comedic and scary aspects of his performance perfectly.
The supporting cast is also great, with standout performances from Celeste O’Connor and Misha Osherovich as Millie’s best friends Nyla and Josh. They provide a lot of the movie’s comedic relief while still managing to feel like real, fleshed-out characters.
The Cinematography and Score
The cinematography in “Freaky” is top-notch. Director Christopher Landon (who also directed the “Happy Death Day” movies) knows how to shoot a horror movie that looks great without sacrificing scares or humor. The score by Bear McCreary is also fantastic, with some truly creepy moments punctuated by upbeat ’80s-style synth music.
The Scenes
Some of my favorite scenes in “Freaky” are the ones where Millie starts to embrace her inner serial killer. Seeing her go from shy teenager to confident murderer is both hilarious and empowering in a way. There are also some great kill scenes that will satisfy even the most jaded horror fan.
The Criticism
Of course, no movie is perfect. One thing that bothered me about “Freaky” was how much it relied on tropes from other horror movies. There are a lot of clichéd moments that I felt could have been subverted in a more interesting way. Additionally, some of the humor fell flat for me – but that’s more a matter of personal taste.
The Evaluation
In the end, I really enjoyed “Freaky.” It’s a fun, entertaining movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously. The cast is great, the cinematography is impressive, and the blend of horror and comedy works surprisingly well. While it’s not perfect, it’s definitely worth checking out if you’re a fan of either genre (or both!). I give “Freaky” a solid 7/10.
