The Conjuring: Last Rites – Another Horror Classic in the Making?
The Conjuring franchise is known for keeping the audience on the edge of their seats, and with The Conjuring: Last Rites, it seems like they have done it again. Directed by Michael Chaves, this is the third film in the main series and is a direct sequel to The Conjuring 2 (2016). The movie brings back our favorite paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren (played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga), as they investigate a new case that is sure to give us chills.
The plot revolves around a murder trial where a man named Arne Johnson (played by Ruairi O’Connor) claims to have been possessed by a demon during the killing. The Warrens are called in to investigate this paranormal occurrence and help prove Johnson’s innocence. However, things take a dark turn when they realize that this demon has been haunting their daughter, Judy (played by Sterling Jerins), who becomes its target. Now, the Warrens must not only fight for Arne’s freedom but also protect their own family from this evil entity.
Bringing Back Classic Horror Elements
One of the reasons why The Conjuring franchise has become so popular is because it brings back classic horror elements that we all love. Jump scares, eerie music, creepy dolls – they’re all here and executed perfectly. The atmospheric tension builds up gradually, and before you know it, you’re holding your breath waiting for the next scary moment to happen.
Another aspect that sets The Conjuring: Last Rites apart from other horror movies is its attention to detail. From the set design to costumes, everything is done meticulously to create a world where demons and supernatural beings exist in our reality.
A Stellar Cast That Delivers
The cast of The Conjuring: Last Rites is superb, with Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga reprising their roles as Ed and Lorraine Warren. Both actors have such a fantastic chemistry on screen that it’s impossible not to root for them. They convey a sense of warmth and familiarity that makes us feel like we’re watching old friends at work.
Ruairi O’Connor as Arne Johnson is also impressive in his portrayal of a man possessed by a demon. He brings an intensity to the role that makes us empathize with his character while also feeling scared for him.
Sterling Jerins as Judy Warren also shines in her portrayal of a young girl caught in the middle of a battle between good and evil. She delivers her lines with such conviction that we believe every word she says.
Analysis of Cinematography & Special Effects
The cinematography in The Conjuring: Last Rites is top-notch, with some stunning shots that add to the tension and atmosphere of the movie. The use of shadows and light is masterful, making us feel like there’s something lurking around every corner.
The special effects in this movie are also impressive, with practical effects used wherever possible to create a more realistic look. The demon makeup and prosthetics are especially well done, giving us a terrifying creature that feels like it’s straight out of our worst nightmares.
A Criticism on The Conjuring: Last Rites
While The Conjuring: Last Rites is a fantastic horror movie that delivers on all fronts, there are some criticisms that can be made. For one, the plot feels a bit too familiar and predictable at times, especially for those who have watched the previous movies in the series. We know what to expect – jump scares, possession scenes, and exorcism rituals – so there aren’t many surprises.
Another criticism is that some of the characters feel underdeveloped. While Ed and Lorraine Warren are given ample screen time to develop their relationship and backstory further, other characters such as Arne Johnson or Judy’s friend Daniela (played by Katie Sarife) could have benefited from more fleshing out.
The Verdict – A Must-Watch for Horror Fans
Overall, The Conjuring: Last Rites is an excellent addition to the franchise that will scare and thrill you. The fantastic cast, impressive cinematography, and special effects, coupled with the classic horror elements we all love, make this movie a must-watch for any horror fan.
While it’s not perfect, and there are some criticisms that can be made, it’s clear that the makers of The Conjuring franchise know what they’re doing. They understand what makes a good horror movie great and deliver on all fronts. So sit back, grab your popcorn, and prepare to be terrified.
