Are We Done Yet?
Are We Done Yet? is a 2007 comedy film directed by Steve Carr. It is the sequel to the 2005 film Are We There Yet?. The movie stars Ice Cube, Nia Long, John C. McGinley, Aleisha Allen, and Philip Bolden.
The Plot
The story follows Nick Persons (Ice Cube) and his wife Suzanne (Nia Long) as they move into their dream house in the countryside with their two kids. Nick decides to renovate the entire house himself, but soon discovers that he is in over his head. To add to his troubles, Suzanne is pregnant with twins and needs him more than ever. To make matters worse, they also have to deal with a crazy contractor named Chuck Mitchell Jr. (John C. McGinley) who seems to be determined to make their lives miserable.
The Cast
The movie features a talented cast of actors. Ice Cube portrays Nick Persons and does an excellent job of bringing his character’s frustration and exhaustion to life on screen. Nia Long plays Suzanne, Nick’s caring and supportive wife. John C. McGinley is the hilarious and eccentric contractor Chuck Mitchell Jr. Aleisha Allen and Philip Bolden play their children Lindsey and Kevin, respectively.
The Soundtrack
The soundtrack for Are We Done Yet? featured a mix of classic rock and new music. The opening credits play to “Everybody Have Fun Tonight” by Wang Chung, which sets the comedic tone for the movie. Other notable songs in the film include “Rock Your Body” by Justin Timberlake and “Bust a Move” by Young MC.
Opinion
While Are We Done Yet? has its moments of comedy, it falls short of its predecessor in terms of overall quality. While Ice Cube does his best with the material given to him, some of the gags come across as forced or predictable. The film also lacks the heart that made Are We There Yet? such a success.
Cinematography
The cinematography in Are We Done Yet? is adequate, but doesn’t stand out. The movie takes place primarily in and around the main characters’ house, which doesn’t give much opportunity for visually stunning shots. That being said, the film does utilize some creative angles and camera movements during its more action-packed scenes.
Special Effects
There are few special effects to speak of in Are We Done Yet?, as it is primarily a comedy film. However, there are a few scenes where practical effects are used for comic effect. For example, there is a scene where Nick attempts to climb onto the roof of the house and ends up sliding down due to ice on the roof.
Dialogue
The dialogue in Are We Done Yet? can be hit or miss. While some lines are genuinely funny and well-delivered by the actors, others come across as cheesy or forced. A lot of the humor in the film relies on physical gags rather than clever wordplay.
Production
The production values in Are We Done Yet? are solid, but unremarkable. The movie was produced by Revolution Studios and released by Columbia Pictures. It was filmed in British Columbia, Canada and features some beautiful natural scenery. The house that Nick and Suzanne move into is an impressive structure, and the special effects used to depict the various renovations are well-done.
Conclusion
Overall, while Are We Done Yet? has its moments of humor, it falls short of its predecessor in terms of overall quality. While the cast does a great job with their roles, the script feels forced at times and lacks the heart that made Are We There Yet? such a success. If you’re a fan of Ice Cube or Nia Long, you might enjoy this movie for their performances alone. But if you’re looking for a truly great comedy film, you might want to look elsewhere.
